How You Consume Cannabis Changes Everything: A Guide to Inhalation, Edibles, Tinctures, and Topicals
Cannabis is one of the most versatile substances on earth when it comes to how you can put it in your body. Smoke it, vaporize it, eat it, hold it under your tongue, rub it on your skin — each method produces a meaningfully different experience, a different onset time, a different duration, and a different chemical interaction with your body. Most people find one or two methods they like and stick with them. But understanding how each one actually works gives you a lot more control over your experience — and helps explain why the same product can feel completely different depending on how you use it.
This article breaks down the science behind each consumption method: what happens in your body, how quickly it kicks in, how long it lasts, and what the health considerations actually are. We'll also cover the combustion vs vaporization question honestly, because that's one where the science has gotten a lot clearer recently.
A quick note on bioavailability before we get into it
Bioavailability is the percentage of a consumed substance that actually makes it into your bloodstream in active form. For cannabis, this number varies dramatically depending on how you consume it — and it's one of the main reasons the same dose can feel completely different across methods.
Your liver is the main variable. Cannabinoids that pass through your digestive system get processed by the liver before entering circulation — a process called first-pass metabolism (think of it as your liver acting as a filter and partially breaking down what you consumed before it ever reaches your brain). Methods that bypass the liver get more of the cannabinoid into your system faster. Methods that go through the liver get less in overall, but what does get through is often converted into a more potent metabolite — a different compound your body creates during processing that can hit harder and last longer.
That's not a simple good/bad equation. It's a different experience, and understanding it helps you dose better.
In plain terms: Same dose, different method, different experience. Your liver is the wildcard. Keep that in mind every time you switch up how you're consuming.
Inhalation — smoking (combustion)
Smoking is the oldest and most widely understood method of cannabis consumption. You light the plant material on fire, it combusts, and you inhale the resulting smoke. Simple concept, more complicated chemistry.
Here's what actually happens: combustion occurs at temperatures exceeding 900°C — over 1,600°F. At those temperatures, cannabinoids and terpenes are released — but so is a complex array of byproducts generated through pyrolysis (the chemical breakdown of organic material through extreme heat) and oxidation. Research has identified over 100 compounds in cannabis smoke, including volatile organic compounds, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs — a class of compounds associated with cancer risk in long-term exposure), carbon monoxide, ammonia, and tar. These are the same categories of byproducts produced by combusting tobacco, wood, or any organic material — burning things produces byproducts, full stop.
That doesn't mean smoking cannabis carries the same risk as smoking tobacco — frequency, quantity, and the absence of additives matter significantly. But the combustion byproducts are real and worth knowing about.
The terpene piece is worth calling out specifically. When terpenes hit those combustion temperatures they don't just burn off — some degrade into different compounds entirely. Myrcene, linalool, limonene and others can break down into compounds including formaldehyde, acrolein, and benzene at extreme heat. You're not just losing the terpenes — you're potentially converting them into something else. This is one of the less-discussed arguments for lower-temperature consumption.
On the other side: smoking has the fastest onset of any consumption method. Cannabinoids absorb through lung tissue directly into the bloodstream, producing effects within one to two minutes. Duration is typically one to three hours. And for a lot of people, the ritual and the feel of smoking flower is genuinely part of the experience — that's real and worth acknowledging.

In plain terms: Look — smoking works, it's fast, and it's been around forever for a reason. But you are burning the plant, and burning anything produces byproducts you're also inhaling along with the good stuff. The terpenes you paid for are partially converting into other compounds at those temperatures. That doesn't mean never smoke. It means knowing what you're choosing when you do.
Inhalation — vaporization
Vaporization heats cannabis to a temperature high enough to release cannabinoids and terpenes as vapor — typically between 160°C and 230°C (320–446°F) — without igniting the plant material. No combustion, no pyrolysis, no smoke.
A 2026 study compared aerosol from vaporized cannabis against smoke from combusted joints using the same cannabis batch. Across all 16 measured harmful or potentially harmful compounds tested — including benzene, formaldehyde, and acetaldehyde — vaporization reduced byproducts by up to 99% compared to joint smoke. The vaporized aerosol consisted primarily of cannabinoids and terpenes with very few detectable secondary compounds. The smoke contained 111 identifiable compounds including multiple known PAHs. Worth noting the study was conducted by vaporizer company PAX — a conflict of interest worth flagging — but the underlying combustion chemistry is well-established and supported by independent research going back to at least 2007.
Temperature control in vaporization actually matters in a way it doesn't with combustion:
160–180°C (320–356°F) — lower range. Preserves the most volatile terpenes. More flavor, lighter effect, clearer head. Good for daytime use or flavor-forward sessions.
185–200°C (365–392°F) — mid range. Optimal THC release alongside solid terpene preservation. The most balanced experience for most consumers.
200–230°C (392–446°F) — higher range. Maximum cannabinoid extraction including CBN, which contributes more sedating effects. Less terpene complexity, heavier body effect. Good for nighttime or pain relief.
Some honest caveats: research has found that some terpenes heated during vaping — even below combustion temperatures — can still generate degradation products at higher voltage settings. Cheap or poorly maintained heating elements in vaporizers can leach trace metals into vapor over time. And vapor still contains ultrafine particulates that penetrate deep into lung tissue — less harmful than smoke, but worth acknowledging.
The overall picture is clear though: vaporization is meaningfully cleaner than combustion. Not zero risk — inhaling anything other than air carries some risk — but the reduction in harmful byproducts is substantial and well-documented.
Vaporizer types worth knowing:
Dry herb vaporizers heat actual cannabis flower. You get the full terpene profile of the flower and can dial in temperature precisely. Widely considered the cleanest and most flavorful way to consume flower without combustion.
Vape cartridges heat oil — distillate, live resin, or other concentrates — using a battery-powered coil. Convenient and discreet. Hardware quality matters here — cheap carts with low-quality coils run hotter and less consistently, which affects both flavor and what compounds you're actually inhaling.
Dab rigs and e-rigs vaporize concentrates at controlled temperatures. At low temperatures (315–450°F) you get full terpene expression and clean vapor. At high temperatures you start approaching combustion territory and lose the advantages of vaporization.
Bioavailability when vaporizing: estimated at 50–80% — significantly higher than smoking due to more efficient delivery and fewer losses to combustion byproducts.
In plain terms: Same plant, completely different exposure. Up to 99% fewer harmful byproducts, better terpene preservation, more efficient delivery. The temperature thing isn't audiophile nonsense — lower temps genuinely preserve more of what makes the flower interesting. If you're currently smoking flower and thinking about a dry herb vaporizer, from a health standpoint it's probably the most meaningful upgrade you can make.
Edibles — oral ingestion
Eating cannabis is a fundamentally different experience than inhaling it, and not understanding why is responsible for more bad nights than anything else in this industry.
When you eat a cannabis edible, the THC travels through your digestive system, gets absorbed in the small intestine, and passes through the liver before entering circulation. The liver converts a significant portion of THC into 11-hydroxy-THC (11-OH-THC) — a metabolite that crosses the blood-brain barrier more efficiently than THC itself and is generally considered more potent and longer-lasting. This is why edibles hit differently. You're not just getting THC — you're getting a more potent version of it that your body created during digestion.
Onset time is the other big variable. Because cannabinoids have to travel through your entire digestive system first, effects typically take 30 minutes to two hours to appear. That window is where most people get into trouble — they don't feel anything after 45 minutes, take more, then both doses hit at the same time. The rule with edibles is simple: wait a full two hours before deciding the first dose didn't work.
What affects edible onset and intensity:
Whether you've eaten recently — a full stomach slows absorption. An empty stomach speeds it up but can intensify the experience.
Fat content of what you ate — cannabinoids are fat-soluble, similar to how fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K require dietary fat to absorb properly. Eating edibles alongside fatty food can meaningfully increase absorption.
Your metabolism and liver enzyme activity — people metabolize cannabinoids differently based on genetics. The same 10mg dose can hit two people very differently, and that's not just tolerance — it's biology.
The type of edible — beverages and fast-acting formats (nano-emulsified edibles, lozenges, dissolvable strips) absorb faster because some absorption starts in the mouth and stomach before the liver is involved. Standard gummies and baked goods are slower.
Duration of edibles is significantly longer than inhalation — typically four to eight hours, sometimes more at higher doses. For sleep and sustained pain relief this is a feature. For a two-hour window and then driving home, it's a problem.
Bioavailability when eating: estimated at 4–12% for oral THC — lower than most people expect, but the 11-OH-THC conversion partially compensates by producing a stronger effect per milligram that does get through.
In plain terms: Edibles are slow, long, and hit different because your liver turns THC into something more potent. Start low — 5mg if you're new, 10mg if you have some tolerance — and wait the full two hours before you even think about taking more. We hear the "I didn't feel anything so I ate three more" story constantly. Don't be that story.
Tinctures and sublingual absorption
Tinctures are liquid cannabis extracts — typically cannabinoids suspended in MCT oil, ethanol, or glycerin — taken by placing drops under the tongue and holding them there for 60–90 seconds before swallowing. The cannabinoids absorb directly through the mucous membranes and thin blood vessel walls under the tongue, bypassing most of the digestive system and the liver's first-pass metabolism.
The result: faster onset than edibles (typically 15–45 minutes), more predictable dose response, and shorter duration (generally four to six hours). Sublingual bioavailability is estimated at roughly 13–35% — higher than edibles, lower than inhalation, but with a predictability advantage that makes dosing more reliable.
One important nuance: if you swallow a tincture quickly instead of holding it, a significant portion gets absorbed the same way as an edible — through digestion. The hold time is what makes tinctures different from just swallowing an oil capsule. Sixty seconds under the tongue. Actually do it.
Tinctures are also versatile — you can add them to food or drinks, though doing so effectively converts them to an oral edible with the slower onset that implies.
Bioavailability sublingually: estimated 13–35%, with some research suggesting up to 40–50% with proper hold technique.
In plain terms: Tinctures are the Goldilocks method — faster than edibles, longer than inhaling, more predictable than either. They're underrated, especially for people who want to avoid inhalation or need consistent dosing. The 60-second hold under the tongue isn't a suggestion — it's what makes them work the way they're supposed to.
Topicals
Cannabis topicals — creams, balms, lotions, oils — are applied directly to the skin and work locally. Standard topicals do not produce psychoactive effects. Cannabinoids interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the skin, muscles, and surrounding tissue, producing anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects in the area of application without meaningfully entering the bloodstream.
This makes topicals genuinely useful for localized pain, inflammation, arthritis, muscle soreness, and certain skin conditions — and genuinely unsuitable for people expecting a systemic or psychoactive effect. A CBD balm on a sore knee works for the knee. It's not going to help you sleep or feel relaxed in the way an edible or tincture would.
Transdermal patches are different and worth knowing about separately. They use penetration enhancers to push cannabinoids through the skin layers and into the bloodstream, producing systemic effects similar to other consumption methods. Transdermal delivery bypasses first-pass liver metabolism, gives sustained slow release over hours, and does produce measurable blood levels of cannabinoids. They're less common on Oregon shelves but exist and are worth asking about if you need sustained systemic relief without inhalation or oral consumption.
Onset for standard topicals is typically 15–45 minutes for localized effects, lasting two to four hours. For patches, onset and duration depend on the specific formulation.
In plain terms: Topicals work where you put them — that's the whole deal. They're not going to get you high and they're not trying to. For localized pain and inflammation they're genuinely effective and completely underutilized. If your back hurts, your knees ache, or you've got a specific spot giving you trouble, a good topical is worth trying before anything else.

Choosing what's right for you
There's no universally best method — it depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish.

TL;DR: Smoking is fast but you're burning the plant and inhaling what comes with that. Vaping is the same plant with up to 99% fewer harmful byproducts — and temp control actually matters. Edibles hit harder and last longer because your liver converts THC into something more potent — start low, wait two hours, no exceptions. Tinctures are underrated: faster than edibles, predictable, no inhalation required. Topicals work where you put them and nowhere else. Every method has a use case.
